Hows your BMI?

Everybody has one, and you should check yours every so often.  You body-mass-index (BMI) is a calculation that combines your height and weight to give you a mathematical value.  This value places you in a range for Underweight, Normal, Overweight, and Obese.

Passive Exercise

Most of us can use more exercise.  And we think exercise is especially important for children and young adults because healthy habits and good health now mean healthy habits and good health as an adult.  But exercise can be hard to fit in with school, work, homework, and other activities already crowding the schedule.  Passive exercise is exercise you get while doing what you normally do - but just a bit differently.

Here are a few tips on getting more passive exercise - and we'd like to hear your ideas on the topic!
  • Use the stairs.  The elevator is a convenience we can usually do without.  If you live or work on a high floor then perhaps start out walking down, and then graduate to walking up.
  • Get off on the subway or bus stop before your stop - and take 10 or 15 minutes to walk the rest of the way to work, school, or home.  Its refreshing and its great exercise.
  • Use the car less, and use the bicycle more.  It can often be faster and easier to "park" when using your bike.
  • If you need to take the car, park away from the entrance and walk.  Its a 5 minute difference and well worth the exercise.
  • Many of us spend hours watching TV every week.  Add exercises like leg lifts and stretching and you'll get healthier while enjoying your favorite show.
These are all easy examples of how to modify what we do every day, to add exercise to our daily routine.  Check back soon on a few ideas about passive dieting - simple substitutions that can dramatically reduce your calorie and sugar intake.
